Electric furnace slag is a kind of byproduct of large volume which is generated in the steelmaking process. It ‘ s volume is 1520% of that of steel liquid. The traditional arc slag treatment method includes crushing, grinding, aging processes and etc. The cost of this kind of treatment is high. The treatment spends a long time, and also causes environmental pollution. Besides, usage of the final slag product is very limit. National Engineering and Technology Management Research Institute of Tehran in Iran and relevant companies in Korea have jointly developed the slag atomization technology (SAT) to avoid these problems. This method adopts a new device which uses high speed air and water to atomize electric arc furnace melting slag ( 1500 1550 ) into small ball with diameter of 0.1 ~ 4.5mm. The small ball is of stable spinal structure, which is called the fine slag ball.

Through this atomization method, 75 80% molten slag can usually be handled. The remainders are heavy material and recyclable metal which are deposited at bottom of the slag pot. SAT product is of great value and do not cause much environmental pollution. It is also adaptable for many uses, such as water treatment, structural material, grinding agent, desulfurizing agent, and so on.

In 1997, the first SAT device is put into use in South Korea. It is expected that by 2009, South Korea, South Africa, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Taiwan, Vietnam, Iran and the United States will plan to install this kind of device. At that time, total capacity of this device will reach 3400000 tons.
