Why Sparking and Leaking Occur at Connection Between Electrode Clamp and Electrode, and How to Deal With It?

Electrode clamp sparks for the reason that electrode and inner wall of electrode clamp are imperfectly connected. This leads to high temperature and metal vapor which are generated in some parts, thus result in arc discharge and sparking. When sparking, surface connecting inner wall of clamp will be burned and damaged. If not taking measures immediately, more serious sparking will occur after the damage. Therefore, vicious circle is formed. The final result will be break of cooling water pipe inside clamp, and also the leakage.
Generally speaking, reasons of imperfect connection between electrode and electrode clamp are:
£¨1£© Irregular surface at connection between electrode and inner wall of electrode clamp:
£¨2£© Copper slag, dust, or splashed oxide is on surface connecting electrode and inner wall of electrode clamp.
£¨3£© Curvatures of surfaces connecting electrode and inner wall of electrode clamp are different.
Measures to take after sparking occurs:
(1)   Using portable grinding wheel machine file to polish inner wall of the clamp;
(2)   Using wire brush to clean away the copper slag, dust, and graphite powder on inner wall of clamp
(3)   Cleaning away oxide on electrode surface when sliding the electrode.
If the burning damage is serious or even leakage occurs, the clamp shall be changed.
